The Payson Reserve Cellar
Tucked into the rugged beauty of Payson, this custom wine cellar is a reflection of both its surroundings and a returning client’s evolving vision.
Having previously partnered with Heritage Vine on an earlier cellar, the homeowner came back with a clear goal: create a second space that carried the same traditional elegance, while feeling more connected to the natural landscape of their mountain home.

A Familiar Vision, Reimagined
The client was drawn to the timeless appeal of a traditional wine cellar, but this time with a softer, more organic presence. Materiality played a key role in achieving that balance.
Rich natural walnut was selected for the racking, bringing warmth and depth to the space while echoing the tones of the surrounding environment. The result is a cellar that feels grounded, designed not just for storage, but for atmosphere.
Designing Around the Unexpected
One of the defining challenges of this project was the architecture itself.
The existing room featured two curved walls—an uncommon condition in wine cellar design, where straight lines typically maximize storage. The goal was to maintain high bottle capacity without sacrificing accessibility or visual flow.
Through thoughtful planning and custom fabrication, the design team created a layout that works with the curvature rather than against it. Each bottle remains easily accessible, while the curvature introduces a subtle sense of movement throughout the space.
To complement this, a custom ladder was designed specifically for the curved walls—blending function with a tailored, architectural feel.
Function Meets Craftsmanship
Despite spatial challenges, the cellar holds an impressive 828 bottles, demonstrating that form and function don’t have to compete.
Key features include:
- Custom walnut racking designed for both capacity and display
- Glass-top display drawers, a favorite feature carried over from the client’s original cellar, allowing visibility into stored selections
- Integrated LED lighting that enhances the richness of the wood and highlights the collection with a warm, ambient glow
Each element was intentionally selected to elevate both usability and visual impact.
A Relationship Built on Trust

This project wasn’t just about building another wine cellar; it was about building on an existing relationship. The client’s decision to work with Heritage Vine again speaks to the experience, trust, and craftsmanship established during our first project together.
