The Boulders Cellar

A Cellar Built for a True Collector

This project came to Heritage Vine through a long-standing builder relationship, a trusted partnership that has shaped many projects across the Valley. The homeowner, an avid collector with a growing collection of 500 and counting, was building a new home in the Phoenix area and wanted a dedicated wine room that would function as both a serious storage environment and a natural extension of the home's traditional architecture.

Working directly with the homeowner made all the difference. Understanding their specific wants and needs, the way they interact with their collection, how they browse, reach, and discover, informs every decision. A wine room is a personal thing, and no two collectors are the same.

The brief was clear: maximum capacity, a dramatic visual presence off the dining area, and storage oriented the way serious collectors prefer, bottles neck-out, ready for inventory at a glance. The cellar needed to feel like a wine library, not just a storage room.

Timeless Materials, Considered Detail

The design language follows Heritage Vine's signature approach: elevating standard modular racking through thoughtful execution and finish. Walnut with a clear coat, a classic pairing, gives the cellar warmth and permanence without straying into the ornate. The result feels unmistakably custom, while the underlying cabinetry system is refined, not restless.

This is a distinguishing characteristic of how Heritage Vine builds. Where others favor open lattice-style wine racks, Heritage Vine's method was architectural, with more cabinetry than trellis, prioritizing a solid, grounded look. The racking carries weight, both visually and structurally, and creates a sense of permanence that suits the traditional character of the home.

The walnut finish was chosen to complement the broader interior palette of the new build, matching the architectural language the homeowner had established throughout the residence.

Working within the Constraints

The footprint presented the central design challenge. Long and narrow, the space demanded creativity and every linear foot had to work hard. A large feature window at the dining area end was non-negotiable: both a visual focal point from the adjoining room and a structural element that couldn't be reconfigured.

Unable to alter the window configuration, Heritage Vine introduced corner shelving to maximise capacity without compromising the view. The package cooling unit was tucked cleanly into the attic, allowing the cellar interior to remain uncluttered and focused on the collection.

The client's desire for a rolling library ladder added another layer of complexity. In a space this narrow, a ladder requires careful geometry — too shallow an angle and it becomes impractical; too steep and it's unsafe. The solution was a steeper-pitch ladder than typical, calibrated precisely to the cabinet depth.

The Centerpiece that Shaped Everything

The stained glass window was not part of the original scope but it became the defining element of the project. The client wanted the cellar to coordinate with a custom piece he had in mind, and Heritage Vine embraced that ambition fully.

The glass was commissioned and fabricated simultaneously with the cabinetry, the two processes running in parallel so that the finished cellar would be built precisely around the piece. Exact measurements were exchanged between the glassmaker and the carpentry workshop. A light source placed behind the glass creates the illusion of a glowing window even without natural light, a touch that transforms the entire cellar, becoming a focal point.
